Have a look on Apple's Kbase and you'll see there's a growing list of Macbook users complaining of this very issue. So far, there has yet to be definitive cause for the problem, but I personally suspect it has something to do with its Power Management Unit.

Also note this line in the appledefects post:
"What is really peaving MacBook owners who are afflicted with the flickering screen is that Apple has started to lock threads on the topic, for no apparent reason."
