Mac Preview not viewing in order

4175 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MacAndy
Hi gang,

Anyone know how to get Mac Preview to preview images in the correct order?

When viewing a hundred or so files, I get them 1,2,45,46,66,67,3,4... etc.

Would be nice to have them in order - 1,2,3,4,5,6... dontcha think?

Trying to discuss image selections with a client, and need them in the correct order, it's a pain otherwise.

TIA

I have had this issue as I use Preview to present my graphics while lecturing. I have not got the full answer on how Preview sorts, because it surprises me every time I prepare a new lecture. In general I number 01 followed by a space followed by the source filename, such a what text it came from or whatever. Works out like this:
  • 01 text1.jpg
  • 02 text3.jpg
  • 03 text2.jpg
If I need to insert an image later I can enter 01.1 text4.jpg an so on. See below at bottom of post:

This lists correctly in Preview, which seems to get confused if I leave out the space or add too many decimal places. I never go more than thirty or so 'slides', but if i got to 99 I'd add a leading zero all the was down.

Also, when you renumber, Preview will get confused if you just close the window - you need to Quit the re-open to make Preview forget the last order for that folder.

Open the thumbnail drawer. Control-click on any image and a contextual menu will appear, allowing you to sort by name, size, keyword etc etc

OK, well, actually I was hoping for a firm change to this. Fix it once and for all.

I want Preview to show images in the correct order ALL THE TIME. And not have to manually switch it. There's gotta be a line of code you can throw at it to fix this bug. And I do believe it *is* a bug, or at least an oversight.

Why would anyone want to view them in some cock-eyed order?

That's just plain stupid.

The default says it is sorting "By Name" but when first opened they are not sorted by name. But manually selecting "By Name" sorts them!

Stoopid.
