I just got a macbook pro, this is hopefully a simple answer.

When I close it, it goes into sleep mode. Can I turn this off so when I close it nothing happens? I put bootcamp on and set it to do so in Windows cause I knew how but can't find it for Mac OS... maybe I'm blind I expected it to be in the system energy savings area.

Download InsomniaX from semaja2

It's exactly what you're asking for. It's also donationware.

BTW, I have yet to see OS X get in the way of anything I'd want to do on the Mac. If a particular function isn't available from the community or the OS, a quick trip to the Terminal and/or Automator usually does the trick.
