You can try the Sony Eye or the XBox camera. Both work very well with Macs and OSX.

I tried the Playstation Eye with my Retina; no go. I'm going to try it with a Mac mini (late 2012). I've heard Lifecam cameras work with the same model, so may try one of those if the Eye fails.

Apparently 10.8 (possibly 10.7 too) loses a lot of webcam compatibility.

eBay was around $65 - $140 range plus shipping.

I've got an iSight camera for my Mac Pro, never use it, but it doesn't have the greatest quality compared to current web cams. I just like the design, so it just sits there.

It should; FireWire devices have always worked when I've done that. Should work over a Thunderbolt adapter, too.

And... I can report that an iSight does NOT work with a modern Mac with Mountain Lion, attached via a FireWire 6/9 400/800 cable.

I bought an iSight to try, and it doesn't work with Mountain Lion (although I tested it and it works with Lion and older systems).

$100 includes: iSight, FireWire cable, 3 mounts including the magnetic one.
