OK here's my question, has anyone tried (or heard of anyone trying) to take an old laptop LCD and jury rig a power supply and VGA out cable and use it as an external monitor?

There are lots of spare LCD parts on ebay, this would be a great garage project.

I thought of that to mount a monitor in my rack. Never had the time to try or a spare LCD to mangle. Would be interested to see if anyone gets it working :D

I thought of doing this a couple of years ago but all my research resulted in a resounding NO. There is no way to rig up some kind of an interface to connect the [inverter board?] of the LCD to some kind of VGA output on it's own. I'm guessing that the VGA output circuitry is on the laptop's motherboard itself. So you can only use the LCD panel with the original laptop.

Which is why, I guess, these laptop LCDs are so cheap in the first place.
