Anybody ever hire a juris doctor or paralegal in lieu of an attorney? I'm looking into this because I need probate services, and some attorneys get 3% of the estate value as their fee. That would mean paying big bucks.

3% does not sound bad, but perhaps the estate is quite large. Given that, could a lower percentage plus flat amount be arranged? Most lawyers should be able to negotiate fees.

Also, if it's just administrative, then expertise may not matter so much (go cheap but competent). If there are problems, then there are many decisions to be made beyond financial.

Oh, no harm in asking; you never know, there might be a US paralegal expert here..

There is certainly no end of judges, juries and executioners, on ehMac.
Careful, or I will find you in contempt and sentence you to house arrest at Paris Hilton's place. (Lucky for you she will no longer be there with you).

Good luck on the legal stuff. Sorry I can't be of more help.
