I bought a LaCie 40 gig Porsche ext. USB 2 drive a while ago
and I didn't buy the extended warranty.
Is an extended warranty necessary?
I bought it at www.tigerdirect.ca for $134.99 cad.

Usually the manufacturer's warranty is good enough (LaCie's seem to be quite reliable from what I have researched). Was the extended warranty from Tigerdirect or LaCie?

I was looking into getting a LaCie external firewire drive for myself but was wondering how easy is it to open the case and swap out hard drives.

It was from Tigerdirect, Up to 2 more years beyond LaCie's warranty.
The one I bought only had the USB 2 option.

When the 40 gig drive fails just buy yourself a nince new big 160 gig fire wire drive for 275.00 from macdoc.
I'm using the LaCie USB 2 40 gig drive in the PCMCIA USB 2
card of my Lombard for storage of my scanned digital photographs.

I love USB 2...So much faster than Firewire 400,
I wonder if there will ever be a USB 3. ;)

As long as you have backed up your important data on the drive, I would say don't spend the money on the extended warranty. When the 40 gig drive fails just buy yourself a nince new big 160 gig fire wire drive for 275.00 from macdoc. Better to put that bit of your money towards a new drive.

Anyone had any success opening the case of one of these?
I'm think of taking the hard drive out and putting into my
Lombard laptop, Would it work?
