Yes, you can export to various formats, but be aware that you are then limited to the strengths and weaknesses of the chosen format.
Keynote
I plan to put together a presentation for work using Keynote (for the very first time). I've had it for a while but never used it.
However I'll be giving the presentation from a macbookpro at work.
Can you give Keynote presentations on machines that Keynote isn't installed on? I know that sounds ludicrous, like asking if you can open a Powerpoint presentation without Powerpoint... but I thought I heard Keynote has some interesting export options, like exporting to flash etc? is that correct?
how would that work for manually advancing slides etc if it's in flash?

That's one good idea -- there's also exporting to a quicktime Movie, and then stopping/starting when needed. (ie: get to slide one press stop -- spacebar -- and so on) that could be a little cumbersome however...Could you download the iWork trial and install it on the Macbook pro at work?
If you don't need funky animations, and are content to simply have static, sequential slides (that look gooooood but don't dance), possibly the best export format to ensure cross-platform playback is PDF.
I wonder if he's talking about how in Powerpoint you can export your presentation so it can be presented on any computer even if it doesn't have Powerpoint.
If you export to an interactive quicktime, you don't have to stop or start the movie. You just play the movie and each build occurs as it would if you were using Keynote. I've done this several times when I've been forced to present using a PC.
The drawback with Quicktime movies is that, unless you export them as very high quality movies (in which case they can be quite large files), the images and transitions aren't as clean.
