Specifically Audacity 2.0.0 which I have been using with OS 10.6.8 before upgrading to El Capitan

Audacity is up to a slight;y later version - 2.1.2 but I read that some people can't even install it on El Capitan.

Anyone use it with El Capitan or knows what the real scoop is?

Thank-you

Well,

Audacity 2.0.0 launched on El Capitan but I couldn't perform a cut command any more.

So I downloaded Audacity 2.1.2 and now Audacity won't even launch.
One gets a very helpful message that Audacity can't be opened....and that's that.

I tried the suggested workarounds on the net -
Delete a folder in the audacity library; also delete the complete audacity folder in the library - same problem.

I also trashed the audacity application but that made no difference.

Audacity was downloaded from the Audacity website so the downloaded file should be fine.

Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear that as it would be nice to run audacity on my MBP. Looks like I will be doing any audio editing on the older computer.

According to their OS compatibility site, Audacity is supposedly supposed to work, but their ratings don't seem to be that reliable for a lot of apps.

It's too bad we lost the old compatibility/update site a while back that was pretty bang on, but I forgot its name. Maybe they gave up trying to keep up to all the Apple's update/upgrades!!

Probably one of the reasons I'm several versions "behind" with Mavericks, but at least all the apps I have and need work. But maybe not as well as I'd like.

EDIT:

Maybe give this a read and a try:

I have used Audacity and Sound Studio not just for recording from vinyl or tape, but for tweaking various audio files. Optimizing to maximum volume is just one aspect. Does not sound like this app is intended for editing.

I have always liked Sound Studio, but it can get pricey with the current never-end-um system upgrades. There is another fairly good one out there but its name eludes me.

I would hope that they get audacity working again on the later versions of the Mac OS.

For what I needed to do in a rush yesterday I ended up using SimpleMovie X to edit the audio file and then Switch to convert the mp4 output file to .wav and mp3
The level on the mp3 file was very low, the .wav file much better but ten times the size.

I'm pretty sure Audacity as well as Reaper are still compatible with Mac OS Sierra as well as with previous Mac OSX versions.

Both are the best DAW (almost) freewares on the market today, both are capable of fully professional audio editing jobs.
Hell, Reaper can even emulate the possibilities of Pro Tools, and handles video editing as well right now!

However, Audacity is not Apple code-signed, so you'll have to set you Gatekeeper to "anywhere", maybe even switch SIP off to get it installed.
Latest version: Audacity 2.1.2:

Same deal may hold true for Reaper, but here it is:
REAPER | Download

Good luck!

Thanks hexdiy - that was it !!!!

I never even heard of Gatekeeper until you mentioned it.

Sure enough - I set it to "anywhere" and Audacity opened just fine and I imported my mp3 file.
Didn't do anything with it since I had found a work around but it's great to have it back for the few times I need it.

But this is yet another example how Apple's development group is getting worse and worse as they come out with new versions of OS X.
In older versions of Mac OS one wold have received an error message along the lines that Audacity can't be opened because Gatekeeper only allows applications downloaded from the Apple Store and certified Developers....instead of can't be opened - end of story.

I'm also a bit surprised that this was never mentioned on the dozen or so threads about this isssue I read on the net.

PS: I assume I can now set "Gatekeeper" back to where it was or is that going to interfere with the use of Audacity?

Been playing with Audacity on El Cap. Quite impressed with improvements since I last checked it out ~2012. So far rock solid.

Still the issue of separate downloads for the LAME encoder or for creating AAC files, neither of which has been needed to date.
