if anyone has an old 1st gen iPod touch laying around in working condition, I'm looking to buy.

Don't need the box or cables or covers/cases. As long as it works and the screen is clear.

If you're able to find one, it may only be useful as a docked device. Battery on models that old are most likely exhausted by now. If you do, and it is, and you want to make it portable, I can recommend the iFixit guide and battery replacement kit... if you've comfortable cracking the case and doing some soldering I just did this with my wife's 1st-gen. Quite amazed that it worked, frankly....
