I'm looking for a new iPhone to last me for the next 4 years. This is what I use a phone for:
  • Music storage: about 40GB
  • Photos: about 1GB
  • Podcasts: download to listen offline, about 2GB max??
  • Watching videos: from nytimes.com or other sources (FB, etc)
No gaming is done.

I'm looking at either the iPhone 7 or 8, 64GB or 128GB? Which capacity is best if I want to make sure that in the next few years I can use my phone for the above mentioned things, and also downloads and iOS updates that may increase in time are handled well on my phone?

Well I use iTunes match so I have my entire library in the cloud and it is great. I have a 6gig data plan so never worried about using up my data.

Personally I like the 128 gig iPhone, but it seems Apple removed that and opted to keep a low 64 gig and 246 gig phone which I think is not very forward thinking. 128 should be the base, especially considering you can shoot 4K video.

If you use the cloud and have a data plan, storage for music is not that big of a deal. I keep a few albums downloaded on the phone, but the rest I let stream.

To be more specific than my OP, I need to download this 40GB so I can access listening to my music on flights, transit, etc. Let's assume I don't want to use up my data plan...in that case, I'm going to guess getting a 128GB would hold everything I want, AND accommodate for future updates in order for my phone to last the next 4 years.

So at 128GB minimum you are looking at a 7 or 7+ or the 8 and X at 256GB.

iPhone 7 128GB - $869
iPhone 8 256GB - $1139
iPhone X 1256GB - $1529

I just got a 7 (128GB) a while ago, and i love it. I upgraded from a 6 which was great (broken screen, decided to switch carriers long story), but i don't see any wow factors in the 8 that would warrant an upgrade. Yes the wireless QI charging is cool... but not worth $300 to me at least. The jump from the 6 to the 7 was pretty awesome tho.

Here's a quick iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7 review ..
