iOS 16 Update

I upgrade my phone to iOS 16 a couple days ago. I really like the Lock Screen customizing you can do. I created a handful of different ones, with multiple different widgets and photos of my family. This is a great addition to the latest update. Has anyone been using tiis?

I tried to use this on my iPhone XR. It seems to be a nice gimmick and not much more. However, I am running into one issue with one option:

when I try to create a screen with Photo Shuffle, I get a message saying "Photo Shuffle is Processing; When your photo library is processed you can choose from smart photo collections etc. etc." and nothing else happens. That message stays on screen.

Now, I understand that my photo library is a bit large, but then after a few seconds, the screen shuts off (power saving, right?). Then later when I turn my phone on, it displays the lock screen; and then I have to repeat the process of creating a new lock screen with photo shuffle, and then the message shows up again; rinse and repeat.

The only thing I can do it to select photos manually and pick a small subset of my photos (because it takes too much time to individually select pics from around 10000 pics).

I personally find it a lot more than a gimmick. It allows you to see multiple widgets and other information without unlocking your phone. Combine this with the always on screen with the iPhone 14. You don’t have to unlock your phone to see important information information. The 16.1 update coming out in a few months will show live sports score updates on your locked screen.

I read online that the photo processing can take anywhere from two hours to a couple days to process, depending on the amount of pics you have. I haven’t had the patience to wait yet. I only have about 1000 pic to red on my phone and it left it processing for about 4 hours while I slept. Still didn’t finished.

Ah! Early adopters. I remember when I used to do that to get the latest and greatest OS and apps on my Windows computer. Older and wiser(?) now? I wait at least a week now for my mobile OS upgrades, and let others do the initial testing. Thanks guys.

I'm just getting to the point of wondering whether I should do the jump from iPad iOS 13.3.1 up to 15.x and/or Jailbreak my 12.9" iPad Pro.

No sense or reason to be on the Leading Edge of any iOS pack... But I understand one cannot go back if one does not like iOS 15.x versions and everything is still working fairly well for my Limited use.

There is always the 'If it ain't broke......". But then again, you are not getting the security updates in the newer versions. Depending on your use, this could leave you vulnerable to attacks on the vulnerabilities that the new updates fix.

Not vulnerable to anything really, considering there is not much more more personal info on my Macs than what could be found in any public directory or telephone book, except maybe my age. But thanks for the cautionary note.

I always download the latest iOS the minute it is available to install. I like looking into the new features of each upgrade. I’ve never had any issues with my iPhones upgrading right away.

The main issue I was running into with my older iPhone 6s, was that some of the updates introduces a significant battery drain issue. That usually got sorted after the next one or two iOS updates.

Looking at the reported issues for this release, it looks like I will probably take the plunge early next week.

That was one of the main reasons we didn't bother upgrading my wife's 6s and going on many user reports regarding some of the last iOS 15.x updates, the battery draw problem was not resolved properly for many users, so I guess we will just leave it where it is. At least for now.

I have read that once one installs the iOS 15.x upgrades, one cannot go back to an earlier iOS version, so why take a chance when at least everything is working properly and the battery still lasts a decent amount of time.

Actually, I don't think there is anything among the new iOS 16 Features except maybe in Dictation that my arthritic hands would appreciate, that either of us could use or actually need with either of our iDevices, 12.9" iPad Pro, iPad Air or iPhone 6s looking at the list:

It is interesting what some actually consider an improvement and I am guessing would actually use some of them. But I guess it is nice to have a choice.

I changed the title of the thread to iOS 16 as it has moved away from the original locked screen discussion.

I have noticed the battery life is a little worst with this upgrade. But the new features far outweigh the slightly worst battery life. At least for me anyways. I’m sure a future update will help to improve this.

This is the other feature that works great. The ability to drag objects from photos to place in message or other documents.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but IOS 16 can't be installed on IOS 6S or 6S Plus. I am in the same boat, as you are.

I was aware of that fa I was just noting my historical experience with my older 6s. I recently upgraded my phone to the new SE 2022.
