Does iMovie HD replace iMovie?

Also, will a DVD created in iMovie HD still be playable on a regular (non-HD) DVD player?

Do I still need to keep iMovie on my computer or can I just keep the HD version?

The short answer is yes. iMovie HD came out a couple of years ago, actually, in iLife '06 (or was it '05? I can't seem to remember).

The "HD" just means it's capable of handling HD camcorder content and producing HD movies, in terms of resolution and aspect ratio. It will still of course support the lower-res SD content.

It's actually iDVD that does the DVD burning anyway, for the most part -- iMovie is primarily the editing application. iDVD won't burn an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc unless you have the appropriate hardware anyway, so you will of course still be able to produce discs that will play in a standard DVD player, as long as you use the standard DVD format when burning.
