We have a 5K iMac here at work that is showing signs of a bad graphics card. It is outside of warranty. Rather then just completely replace it I had an idea about trying an external graphics card. I have never used one before, would this over ride the graphics card in the iMac and run everything through this and potentially solve the graphics card issue?

I don't know and I don't know if Apple/Mac/macOS News, Updates, Tips and Tech Articles - xlr8yourmac.com still supports such things but you could have a search there and see, they just might have some information for you that would help but they used to have some very good useful information for such things:

Hopefully you can find something there.

Turns out this is not an option, I though the iMac was a little newer but it only has Thunderbolt 2. eGPU needs Thunderbolt 3 so this idea is ruled out.

Thanks!
