Right from Apple, how to install iDVD on any Mac that otherwise meets the minimum requirements but does not have a SuperDrive installed.

Apple Tech Document 93290

Handy info for troubleshooting and will probably help some of those "unsupported" installations get off the ground.

My sister recently bought a combo drive eMac that came with iDVD installed and working on it (I got a little excited when I saw it thinking they had accidently provided her with a Superdrive).

I have it too! Does this mean I can burn DVD's even though I have only the combo drive?

No. You need either a Superdrive or compatible DVD drive that can write a well as read. A combo drive plays DVDs but only burns CDR & RWs.
