You may be able to create your slideshow in iPhoto, export it to a QuickTime movie. Then in iDVD create a new project, go to the DVD layout view (the little organigram button) and put your vidéo in the "startup section" (first left).

You'll stil have a theme, but your video will start playing at startup and you will never see it.
