Hi.

I have one of the new 12" PowerBooks on loan from Apple Canada this week. While moving my profile from another machine, I made a mistake, so I decided to scrub the hard drive and start again.

Here my problems began. Apparently, the new PBs won't boot from any system CD previous to 10.2.4 (presumably to keep OS9 off the system). I thought I could simply restart from my 'Jaguar' CD, but no dice. At startup, I get the 'flashing question mark folder' and it won't go any further.

The machine shipped to me without any system CDs ("They go missing if we include them," says the PR guy) so I'm waiting for a courier to bring me a CD set.

Meanwhile, I've become interested in the problem. Is there really no way to recover from this, short of using the CD that ships with the machine?!

I used a utility called BootCD to create a 10.2.4 system disk on my iBook, but the 12" PowerBook freezes during startup with this CD. (It seems to be searching for something and not finding it -- something to show the boot disk was made on the PB itself?)

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yiu could try restarting the powerbook in Firewire disk mode, I think it is apple and T together on startup or option plus T, then drag over 10.2.4 system files, then try to restart

Simply putting 10.2.4 on the HD didn't fix the problem. That's what makes this problem so frustrating (and so interesting).

I tried reinstalling Jaguar using FW disk mode, as you suggest. (BTW, you only have to hold down the 'T' key during power up to enter FW disk mode.)

I didn't just copy the files -- I actually installed 10.2 on the PB hard drive (while it was slaved to the iBook).

After installing Jaguar, I ran Software Update to get the system up to 10.2.4. Then I shut down both machines and disconnected the PB from the iBook.

When I started the PowerBook again, I got the same flashing question mark folder. I'm afraid it's looking for something besides 10.2.4. -- some mystery ingredient that's only on the PB system disks.

Either that, or I'm missing something else that should be obvious...

I guess you need a system CD, and there's no way around it.
There must be a specific file on the install cd that works with the 12 inch PB
oh well, we tried

While surfing the Apple support Discussions forum, I found this thread, which covers a related problem -- a user who is unable to boot from his iPod with the new PBs.

The new PowerBooks require the latest version of 10.2.4, which is keyed to the latest open firmware in the new PowerBooks.

So... I need the system CD(s) to fix this problem. Furthermore, I need to update the system files on any external hard drives before I'll be able to boot from those drives.

Logical. Frustrating. Apple. ;)

It's absolutely normal for a Mac not to boot with an older system than what it shipped with. If it shipped with MacOS 10.2.4 then it requires a MacOS version of 10.2.4 or higher (10.2.4 is the minimum). This isn't specific to the new Powerbooks and booting MacOS X only. This is because the new hardware (It's a new Mac with Firewire 800, Airport Extreme, etc.) is only recognized by the new MacOS. You can see this chart for MacOS 9.x examples of this:

It's strange the Mac didn't come with a system CD, but I guess it's because it's a loaner.

It's also strange that it didn't start up from a HD with MacOS 10.2.4 on it. It may be that the MacOS 10.2.4 that came with the Powerbook is a later build than what you used. It isn't strange for new hardware to come with a MacOS that isn't available publicly yet.

Agreed. However, since the new PowerBooks do not ship with any version of OS9, they won't boot from any OS9 CD. This behaviour, although consistent with previous releases, is new in these machines.

This has implications for supporting these machines. For example, 12" and 17" PB owners, and those who support them, will need an OS X utility program like Drive 10 rather than relying on DiskWarrior

Yes. This appears to be the root of my current problem.

Thanks for shortening that link... I editted my post to take out that huge link. It ruins the format of the thread.

Hopefully at some point Apple will extend that chart for MacOS 10.x. At some point new hardware will require a minimum of MacOS 10.3, 10.4, etc...

The system CD arrived and all is well now.

A correction to my own information in previous posts: the system software on this new PowerBook is OS X 10.2.3, not 10.2.4 as I thought.

Keep those backups handy,

Umm for URLs it is possible when adding them here on ehMac instead of giving the address just put what you want as the link to show as in the 2nd dialog box when you click on the URL button in the Instant UBB Code.

Yeah, I thought for those machines that have DVD drives (Superdrive or Combo drive), they were shipping them with a system DVD.

It's almost certain that certain files required for the new PB isn't on the (older) Jag install disks.

It could be anything, but as a for instance, it could be looking for 802.11g chipset support.
