HELP: impending PBG4 12" doom?!

Okay, my original thread is here:
http://www.ehmac.ca/mac-ipod-help-troubleshooting/54388-12-g4-random-overtemp-sleep-syndrome.html
PBG4 12"/30gb/512/10.4.1

However, I think things have developed. I'm getting high temp readings still for the processor. It's not a hot day here in Ottawa, and I'm even in an A/C'd room.
Right now, I have only safari and Temperature Monitor open, and I'm getting readings as high as 72 degrees, and scrolling is becoming increasingly difficult.
Scrolling through Safari-- even pages so benign as ehmac or google-- maxes out the processor (seeing this in menumeters) and processor temps jump on average 15 deg. Fan revs high for ten seconds or so, and then revs down. (And Safari just crashed...!)
Secondly, Spotlight just stopped working altogether, even after a reboot. Software update froze up, too.
I've repaired permissions twice, to no avail.
Console tells me : "configd[36]: AppleTalk startup failed, status = 92"
On a fellow ehmacer's suggestion, I removed the battery to see if it had been somehow the cause to a PMU problem. No difference.
Lastly, the system is a clean install with a migration of home folder from my mac mini.

I think that's all the info I could give. Am I experiencing a major harware meltdown, or a software problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you run the Apple hardware test? I think its on the install CDs, boot up holding down the 'D' button. Might give you an idea as to what the issue is.

Next, I would run it in single-user mode (Command+S on restart) to see if it goes crazy doing something as basic and simple as that. If so, you'll know it's not a software issue.

Boot up on an external HD (perhaps the internal HD is buggy - who knows)

If you have extra RAM Modules, take one out and run a basic system and see if it heats up (RAM issues?)

Run with no brightness or an an external screen to see if running the backlight is heating it up.

Clear up some HD space, though I've never heard of this making the computer over heat, it may help with sluggish processing.

Take out battery/power cord and hold down power switch for 8 seconds.

Zap PRAM (Command+Option+P+R on reboot).

Obviously, test without any peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc.)

Hope some of this helps - Good Luck.
