Hello all.

I've a late 2013 MBP. I recall hearing ages ago (maybe in late 2013, lol, but possibly back in the G4 days) that some Apple laptops had difficulty with heat dissipation while in clamshell mode (lid closed, only using an external monitor).

Confirm or deny?

Danke!

I have the same model, late 2013, I used to use it in clamshell mode all the time with a 30”, I had it up on an aluminum stand which possibly helped some. No issues.

If you are at all concerned about the temperature of your MacBook Pro, download and setup Macs Fan Control.app to keep it under a maximum temperature that you are comfortable with.

I have used it with all our macs with great success.

Not forgetting that the fans need a place for cool air in and hot air out to be able to do any cooling, and i don't know where the vents are on all the mac models, or if they rely on the lid to be open. Something to consider regardless of what the software is saying.
