In the AppleCare fine print, it says its refundable on a pro-rata basis.

I'm curious. Has anyone actually tried to get some money back from Apple?

I have a QS733 and 17" LCD for sale. They are both covered by the same AppleCare. Of course I'd rather sell them as a package.
If Apple really does a refund, I wouldn't be so reluctant to split them up.

You can split them up and still have the covered under warranty. Just give whoever buys them a copy of your bill and Applecare number. As long as they were bought on the same invoice, the Applecare warranty has been applied. It doesn't matter if you own them, someone else owns them or 2 different people own them. If you can get a refund, thats cool but you will likely be able to sell them easier if they have warranty on them.

I hadn't thought about that.

I figured that the AppleCare was really for the cpu, and the display was covered only if it stayed with the cpu

No worries! I have had lots of customers do this when they upgraded from the 15" or 17" to the 20" or 23". I have only had to use the Applecare once but all Apple did was ask for the original bill of sale. They sent us a box, we put the display in and 4 days later, our new one showed up.
