I wanted to partition my 60 gig into three smaller partitions, so I backed up my data and reformatted the drive. I reinstalled Panther and ran software update. Apple now tells me that I need to install Hard Drive Update 1.0:

"IMPORTANT -- It is strongly recommended that you back up the data on your hard drives to an external drive or removable media before running this update. If an error should occur during the update process, your hard drives may become unusable. In that case, all data on the drives could be lost.

Note: When installation is complete, Hard Drive Update 1 should launch automatically. If the update does not launch automatically, please launch it manually:
/Applications/Utilities/Hard Drive Update 1"

Anyone else has to run this?

Should I as well?

It's only for some stock drives; see here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120231

"About the Hard Drive Update 1

The Hard Drive Update 1 improves the longevity of some hard drives shipped in certain Power Mac G4 computers, including:

Power Mac G4 Cube
Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics)
Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio)
Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)
Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver)

Most drives do not need this update. You can check the drives in your computer by running this update. If an update is needed, you will be given a chance to quit and perform backup before continuing with the update."

Don't panic
