Going to buy the iPhone, help needed please!

Hello all,

I have finally made the decision to buy an iPhone and unlock it for Rogers. I have a couple of questions though. First up, can I get Rogers to turn off EDGE? I read on these forums that it is possible, but can someone confirm? Secondly, what happens with the warranty and if you experience any problems over the next year? Is the warrant serviceable in Canada? Thats a pretty big concern.

I just realized now that since I am in the downtown core (Toronto) all day (and I have a wrieless network at home) in the worst case I can sign up for Toronto Hydro unlimited wifi for $29.99/month. But who knows what the free coverage in my area will be like. I'll have the iPhone experience pretty much all the time with this setup. Not bad. Is there any other advice out there for me? Thanks in advance!

Disabling EDGE is easy, just clear the settings for EDGE in the Settings/General/Network/Edge panel. You can also call Rogers and say you want EDGE disabled on your account.

As long as you're only doing a software unlock, your warranty should be good. If you ever had to get it serviced by Apple it would be best to restore it. The warranty is International so you're good for servicing.

I'm in the same boat, and I got the Hydro One Zone monthly thing - came out to $33.06 after taxes. The coverage area is pretty nice, and even extends beyond what the coverage maps say. Signal is pretty nice, never drops.
Nice, thanks for the input dude!
There should be an iPhone FAQ on ehMac.
You asked about other devices...

I have a Nokia E61 for sale. Its in the classifieds somewhere...

It's a QWERTY smartphone with WIFI, MP3, etc... syncs natively with OS X. It would be a fraction of the cost of an iPhone. It's also unlocked and the WIFI would work great with that Hydro Wireless.

Just fyi

Where are you using Hydro One Zone? Inside the office towers downtown or in more open space? Just got an iPhone and am wondering whether I'll get good reception 13 floors up in Scotia Plaza.
It would be a fraction of the cost of an iPhone.
Drive to Buffalo: $20 of gas
8GB iPhone: $399
Tax: $27
Duties: depends what guard you get but probably free if you just buy one
Unlock: Free
Having an iPhone for under $500 and a fraction of the cost of buying any PDA phone through Rogers without contract = priceless.

Cut that formula by $100 if you get the 4GB model on clearance through Apple.com, ship it to a UPS store in Buffalo and pick it up.

So what's a fraction, $100? I may have a buyer for you.
I think you meant a fraction of $500... it would have been half the cost. But I think I may already have a buyer... I'll let you know if it falls through though. Maybe its him!

Anyway, I am curious about this shipping to a UPS store that everyone is speaking of. How does this work and what does it cost? And even if this does work, don't you need an American billing address on your credit card?

Don't know about the Buffalo area, but here out west near Vancouver there are postal receiving services just over the border that accept parcels. $1 per package to receive, $1 for telephone notification. Might be the same in NY state?

Credit cards might be an issue. If you call the US Apple Store, I understand that you can wire transfer or send money order once they set up your order quotation, then have sent to a US address... Refurbished 8GB iP's going for $349... nice deal.
