Gas price-gouging to get worse?

"Motorists facing spiralling gasoline prices on the first long holiday weekend of the summer are on their own, politicians say, with one warning that "market forces" and green policies may drive the price to $2 a litre.

As prices jumped above $1.10 a litre at most Toronto stations yesterday, federal Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn said future price hikes are inevitable if the opposition continues to demand tougher environmental measures."

The article goes on to say oil companies are making as much as 24 cents profit per liter sold. That's not too greedy or anything...

Seriously, increasing the price of gas to demand stronger environmental measures? I'm not against cleaning up our planet, but vehicles are one thing EVERYONE depends on (whether it's public transport or not), and causing wide-spread anger by increasing gas prices by two-fold amounts is going to cause a slew of other problems on the side along with our environmental issues. Nothing like trading one problem for another! That's our way of solving issues! /sarcasm

Apparently some workers are charging double and triple time for working on the Victoria Day weekend--JUST BECAUSE IT'S THE HOLIDAYS!

I think the price of labour has been fixed.

It's not just a coincidence.
MF, could you show other signs of mendacity?
You are on quite the roll....
I suspect it will get worse. Who's going to stop it, Governments? They're part of the problem.

The oil companies have being allowed to triple their profits at the refining level in the last few years. Canada once had something like 44 or 45 refineries, but we now have 13 and they're running at pretty much full capacity. The oil companies have learned if you reduce the supply of available gas you can increase the price and therefore profits. The same situation exists in the U.S. And there is no incentive to build new ones.

The Competition Bureau is pretty much a joke. From what I understand, all of their investigations have been about pricing of gas at the retail level but none, to my knowledge, has been done at the wholesale/refinery level.
Are we supposed to cry for you? $1.10? Go complain somewhere else. Oh look at me I'm from Toronto I deserve low gas prices. Vancouver will hit $2 a litre first and you guys will be whining about $1.50 a litre. Jerks.

Why would the government want to see the price of gas lowered? The GST is a percentage of the price of gas that we pay.

I drive a car with a tank that is a little over 50 liters. At .50 per liter, when I filled it up it would have cost me $25.00 with $1.42 of that being GST (6%).

At $1.00 per liter it would cost me $50.00 with $2.83 of that being GST.

At $1.10 per liter it would cost me $55.00 with $3.11 of that being GST.

I'm still consuming the same amount of gas each week. So every the price of gas goes up, it means more money in the Federal Government's bank account.

Wow. That's pretty over the top. Like, chill dudesterama... you'll live longer. And please - stop flinging those little red balls of scowling fury at all us Torontonians... we don't deserve your misplaced ire.

OK?
I want the price of gas to go up for the environment...err...down for the consumer...errr...up so government gets more tax revenue...unless government gives up it's monstrous share, in which case I want to...uh....nationalize the oil industry...or just the refineries...or just the gas pumps.
My apologies for insulting the cen.... Toronto. Just a habit.

Gas stations just across the border from us have gas prices that are still under $1 CAD a litre and they're complaining.
OK... cool. Thanks for the clarification. I don't feel like arguing over stuff like this tonight anyway... life's too short, ya know?

And just so we're clear, Torontonians are the most ridiculous people on the planet... except for everyone else.

Cheers!

The sooner, the better.
Bought fuel in northern Montana for $3.19/US gal over the weekend.

Current exchange rate is 1.08. US gallon = 3.78 litres. So, if my math is right ($3.19/3.78 litres*1.08), that's Cdn$0.91/litre. Local pumps are serving up gasoline around $1.16/litre.
And if my math is correct, that makes the gas the US buys from us over 22% cheaper down there than here.

Goughing indeed.

Did dental floss have anything to do with why you were there?

Do you mean, did we go down for $5 worth of groceries and $100 worth of fuel? No. We spent the weekend at the cabin with the outlaws.

However, at a 25 cent/litre discount, it starts looking attractive, no? After all, much of it came from Canada in the first place...

Actually, it was a weak reference to Frank Zappa. I should stop posting before I fully wake up...

Ha ha!

Sorry, not a big Zappa fan, would've missed the reference even if would have been far less oblique.

I read your post again afterwards, wondered if I was a bit thick myself and missing something. :D
