Is it possible to say, copy an instrument file from GarageBand, open it in waveform manipulation software, radically alter the sound of the file (like adding chorus effects, flange, pitch shifting, distortion, etc) and then re-import it into Garageband for use? Or does GarageBand have the facilities to make these alterations within the application without the need for exportation of the tracks to an external processor?

I guess what I'm really asking here is whether or not the Garageband loop/instrument file format is proprietary and only works in Apple's product or whether it supports any popular sound file standard?

I would suspect AIFFs files and that you should be able to plop your own joints in there. Were that not available, it would be defeating the whole purpose. Not played with it yet, but I'm sure that should be possible.
