I had this issue a while back and had to drain my battery to empty and then recharge. The battery's calibration had gone and needed to be reset. I did it by running the computer until it went to sleep and then just let it drain completely over a day or so.

Are you able to wake your machine when it randomly sleeps? If so, you may want to check the iBook's energy saver settings. They may be overly aggressive in favour of saving battery life. If the machine sleeps even when plugged in then the issue likely doesn't involve the battery.
