I had thought about this just for the very same reason and purpose, however if your battery is toast the Belkin will not help you. Apple offers a battery replacement program in which you send in your ipod and is replaced with another. Not your original but a functional replacement. Cost 100US Alternatively, third party batteries are a cheaper solution than Apples, currently 50-60US. Not too shabby and feedback seems to be very positive for 1st gens. The kit includes a special tool and detailed diagrams to aid in replacing. They also have replacements for the current gen although it may be premature at this point for most owners but a small comfort nonetheless.

This ext batt pack kills the sleek and portable nature of the whole unit. Seemingly not something that I would consider.
