External Drives that sleep properly . . .

1561 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  CdnPhoto
I have a couple of big drives in Vantec Mini like enclosures that don't sleep properly when connected to the Mini. They don't sleep when the Mini does, and one of the fans has now burnt out, so I'm looking for drive enclosures or external HDs that sleep properly.

Lacie?
Maxtor?
WD?

Or any other suggestions?

Hmm.. I have three different drives and none of them sleep properly. I'm thinking it's the OS that isn't doing it's job. In fact, my computer won't even go to sleep if I leave something plugged into the left USB port on my MBP. Glitchy OS....
My HP media vault sleeps nicely when not in use :) Integrates very well with my Mac only network I might add :D
Seagate FreeAgent or FreeAgent Pro is way

I just got a Seagate FreeAgent drive. It decides to sleep whenever it feels like! Basically, if you don't use the drive for five or ten minutes it will shut down automatically. If try to access the drive when it is asleep, you will hear it spin up and it will only take about 3 seconds to come back online. It also comes with a 5 year warranty, much better then WD.

Just my humble opinions.

Cheers

I have to Lacie drives (FW) and 1 Ministack (FW) connected to my iMac and they all sleep properly.

In Energy Saver prefs have you selected to put the HD to sleep when possible?

that applies to external hard drives as well?

doh! :)
All my 3.5" Macally/Seagate combos sleep as expected.
Most Firewire enclosures go to sleep when inactive. A bit of a hit and miss with USB.

I have heard others say the same. Mine are all connected via FW.
I was going to mention that my Generic FW enclosure goes to sleep when not in use too. I didn't realize it was the FW part. I'll have to test it out with the USB port. (It's dual FW/USB)
