Hey all-- need more advice. Gonna buy an external cd-rw, and since firewire is not that common (or whatever the reason) they are more expensive than USB 1 or 2. But someone tried to convince me that regular USB 1 would be fine for a cd-rw-- since the regular burst speed of regular USB is faster than what cd-rw can transfer anyways. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

USB 1 is about 10 times times slower than USB 2,
I have a USB 2 48x24x48 external burner attached to my
laptop running OSX 10.2.6 via a USB 2 PCMCIA card and if it
was a USB 1 card or USB 1 device then there is no way that
it could burn a CD at 48x.
If it was USB 1 then the top burning speed would be more
likely around 4x.

Hope this helps you to choose USB 2

What machine??
Makes little sense to go Firewire external if you have the ability to go internal.

FYI,

I have an external YAMAHA 20-10-40 CDRW Firewire (400) that I no longer need and would be willing to sell to ya. E-mail me.
