eMac, no airport, worked 2 days ago
cannot access internet nor email nor in house server
ethernet cable plugged in and tried different cable

network system preference only shows "modem"
built-in ethernet has disappeared
no IP address, not even a "197......" which usually shows no IP address was available
DHCP via router
other macs are ok

checked apple system pref. and MAC address is there

ran Disk Warrior and repaired permissions

any suggestions other than archive and install?

Have you tried connecting by ethernet at the eMac's location, perhaps with a laptop? Turn off airport and try a new "location" using ethernet in network preferences. If that works the problem is in the eMac and you might have to go for the archive and (re)install.

Go to "Network Port Configurations" under 'Show' under Network (System Preferences) and ensure that the ports are checked. If they aren't, check them, then hit 'Apply Now.'

You might also try zapping the PRAM at startup.

It sounds like somehow you turned off the other ports in your Network Preference Pane.

From the "Show" pop-up menu in the Network PrefPane, choose "Network Port Configurations" and make sure that ethernet is checked.

EDIT: That'll teach me to open up a bunch of threads and read 'em casually over the course of an hour. Lars beat me to it.

looked at port config. and built-in ethernet exists and is checked
tried unchecking and rebooting , then checking and rebooting and still no entry in network system pref.

it's an old OS from Jaguar upgraded thru Tiger

Damn them all and their Weirding Ways! All these years I thought it was just the luck of the draw ... maybe the answer would have been in the last story had Herbert finished it before his death! That was a nasty cliffhanger .. and I didn't find out there was no continuation until after I had read them all grrr.

a PC tech. from a company on the same floor disconnected the ethernet connection in that office from the patch panel while "cleaning up" the cabling in the cable closet
