I have a DVD writer (Samsung Writemaster) installed in my G4 (OS 10.4.9) which I have been using for over a year with no problems.
I was burning a data DVD last night when it gave an unknown error and ejected the disk. Since then, the drive will not mount any CDs or DVDs.
System Profiler sees the drive but Disk Utility does not.
Any ideas for getting this working again?

Dumb question. Did you just run the security update? If so try doing the permissions repair in the disk utility and a reboot. If that does not resolve the issue, revert to your system back-up.

Or - possibly your optical drive hardware failed, accounting for both symptoms.
Or a cable came loose inside.
Ditto on the optical hardware failure possibility.

If it's a hardware issue, the optical drive needs to be replaced.

If it's a hardware issue, the optical drive needs to be replaced.
So start at the software end. If it does not resolve the issue you have spent a only few minutes and know you need to replace the drive.:)

Firmware can also cause this issue. Most G4s do not require firmware updates. To be sure, down load Mac Tracker and check your model.

This might be one of the few times zapping the PRAM will help. Shut the computer down. Reboot while holding down the "Apple-Option-p-r" key combination. Keep them down until you hear the start-up chime 3 or 4 times.

Edited May 30 11:00 AM to correct bad key combination instructions. Sorry:eek:
