Well, 2010 has come and gone. The eggnog has been drunk, all the chocolate has been ate, and hopefully a few lucky ones got some new Apple gear in their stockings. Now that the festivities are over and its back to the grind for most of us, I thought it would be fun to compile a few informal ehMacian Top 10 lists for 2010. Sort of a fun retrospect on our past year.
So, without further adieu, our first Top 10 list will be the
Top 10 Most Participated-In Threads In The ehMac.ca Forums (Otherwise, commonly known as the TTMPITITEF). This Top 10 list might not be completely scientifically accurate, but is more a sampling from each of the various forums on ehMac.ca. So, starting from the bottom...
Number 10: Embarrassments for Harper
Ahh... nothing gets many an ehMacian riled up like a good old political debate. This thread was started in reaction to Canada losing a seat at the UN Security Council. Many an ehMacian weighed in on the topic.
Number 9: The Second Official, Authoritative GHG Thread
Well, the first one got a little too heated and was locked, but that didn't stop anyone from starting the unofficial, second official thread. The thread contains plenty of links to various research reports and stories and I'm sure countless hours of Googling where involved. The thread for some reason is only rated one star by members. We'll leave it at that.
Number 8: Office 2011: Really? Really?
This thread was our most popular in 2010 from our Mac and iOS troubleshooting forum. Microsoft Office is in fact one of the most popular apps on the Mac market, but that doesn't mean that ehMacians have to like it. I'm sure Microsoft could feel the hate from some ehMacians all the way in Redmond.
Number 7: iPad
Seconds after Steve Jobs announced the name other their new tablet, this thread started with a simple question:
iPad?? It's fun when Apple announces a new product, and it's almost as much fun looking back at initial reactions, from mocking the name, to trying to figure out what it was for. ehMacians predicting it would be a dud have a bit of mud in their eye now.
Number 6: Shipping notification received!! Woo hoo!!
As a reflection on the iPad's success, one of the most popular threads in the iOS section was ehMacians tracking their shipments of their newly purchased iPads making their way through the courier system. There were lots of screen shots from FedEx's webpage, ETA's, and squealing ehMacians when their iPads finally arrived at their door.
Number 5: Next shipment of IP4?
Similar to the previous iPad shipment thread, the other super popular thread was anticipation of receiving the new iPhone 4 and when it would be showing up in stores. Apple had tons of problems meeting demand of iPhones, leaving carriers like Rogers and Bell without iPhones to sell, and huge lineups early in the morning at official Apple stores. It made it almost like cracking the Divinci code trying to figure out who had them in stock, when they typically arrived, and strategies for getting a hold of one and when to line up.
Number 4: Apple announces new iMacs
Lots of excitement when Apple updated their iMac line on July 27th. Nothing radically different, but a nice bump to one of Apple's flagship products.
Number 3: Poll: If Adobe Splits From Apple ...
With Apple and Adobe's public "feud" in 2010 of Flash and whatnot, one ehMacian wondered and put it to a poll, what would happen if Adobe decided to drop support from Apple? Well, so far that hasn't happened, and is unlikely to ever happen, but it sure made for an interesting discussion.
Number 2: Netflix on Wednesday
One of the top search requests on Google that leads visitors to ehMac is searches on
Netflix for Mac in Canada. When word came out that Netflix's video streaming service was finally coming to Canada, this thread got a lot of attention. ehMacians can now watch Netflix on their Macs, iPhones, iPads and Apple TV's for $8 per month. I just finished watching the documentary
Maxed Out a few hours ago on my Apple TV. It will be exciting to see how things progress in the area of streaming content from services such as Netflix and iTunes progress in 2011.
Number 1: Apple Event: "Back to the Mac" - October 20th
When Steve Jobs speaks, most Mac users listen. Nothing gets ehMacians more excited than an Apple event where Steve Jobs gives us our full dose of 'reality distortion field'. At the "Back to the Mac" event on October 20th, Steve revealed features of Apple's forthcoming OS "Lion" and also iLife 11. As has become somewhat of a tradition now at Steve keynotes, we also got our "One-More-Thing" with the new MacBook Air. As usual, the hype didn't quite live up to the actual announcements, but as the saying goes, if Steve announced a way to turn sand into silver, there'd still be some ehMacians complaining they weren't turning it into gold.
So that was a snapshot of 2010 with our Top 10 list of popular threads. Stay tuned for several other Top 10 lists from 2010 in the next 24 hours!
