I've two hard drives mounted in my G5 - the second one is used as a volume for back-up data.

When I launch Disk Utility, the drives don't always appear in the same order at the left side of the pane. I have never had any problems with Disk Utility, but I'm curious about how / why it orders mounted volumes the way it does - which is to say, inconsistently.

By chance, are you booting from different drives when this happens?

OS X always puts your boot drive first.

If this isn't the case, I'm not sure why else it would happen.

Here's something you can try as a comparison.

Open the Terminal.app and type the following:

diskutil list

Type it exactly as above, and press RETURN

It will provide more detailed information about your disks. Run it at both instances while displayed in the GUI DiskUtility app and compare. It might provide a clue.
