In what can only been seen as good news for Mac Users and the probability of Leopard being delayed so that it's rock solid... CNet is reporting that due to customer demand, Dell has bought back Windows XP on some of it's Inspiron and Dimension systems so that people aren't stuck with Windows Vista.

Amid significant customer demand, the computer maker said on Thursday that it has returned to offering the older Windows version as an option on some of its consumer PCs.

Like most computer makers, Dell switched nearly entirely to Vista-based systems following Microsoft's mainstream launch of the operating system in January. However, the company said its customers have been asking for XP as part of its IdeaStorm project, which asks customers to help the company come up with product ideas.

"We heard you loud and clear on bringing the Windows XP option back to our Dell consumer PC offerings," Dell said on its Ideas in Action page. Users get to vote on various suggestions, and the notion of bringing back XP got 10,000 "points," making it among the most popular requests but well below top picks such as adding Linux or OpenOffice.org to its PCs.

Windows XP systems became scarce, but not impossible to find, after Vista arrived. For example, Hewlett-Packard said it would continue selling XP on some machines aimed at small and midsize businesses, while CompUSA still stocks a couple of business-oriented XP systems in its retail stores. Lenovo has also continued shipping XP on many of its business systems.

Starting immediately, Dell said, it is adding XP Home and Professional as options on four Inspiron laptop models and two Dimension desktops.

Earlier this month, Dell added XP back as an option for small-business customers, but at the time, it said it would not add it back for home users.

"Dell does not have plans to launch Windows XP for home users as the preference, and demand is for the 'latest and greatest' technology, which includes Windows Vista," Tom West, director of small-business marketing at Dell, said in a blog posting at the time.

Analysts say Dell's move is not a good sign for Windows Vista.

"That there is remaining demand from some segment of (the) consumer market points to the inability of Vista to resonate with consumers," IDC analyst Richard Shim said.

I was talking to a PC tech yesterday and he said he's getting lots of people with new Dells with Vista on them coming in to install Windows XP. People were pretty angry with Dell I guess.
This can't be going over well in Redmond. One would imagine that a chair or two has been tossed by Ballmer over this.

Another thing to consider... Dell is the only company who can do this as they have the clout to do this without fearing some sort of backlash (a flying chair perhaps?) from Microsoft.
Trouble in Redmond? Hmm... I'm sitting in an MS building right now and there has been a lot of talk about this around the hallways. Have you heard the news that MS will be officially cutting off OEM sales of XP in 2008? So this is the last year you can purchase XP. I don't know if this problem is always going to around for MS, and I think most people will eventually (2-3 years from now) start to be "Ok" with vista, but there is just too many programs that are claimed to not run on or be compatible with it yet.

I'm bummed that 10.5 was delayed, but I'll wait if it's worth it.
How is this Mac news?
It shows that vista isn't taking off and people aren't adopting it, which may consequently make people consider a mac more closely... I would consider it as indirect mac news.
Well I guess this is why I chose to buy XP instead of Vista for my new MacBook Pro.
I wonder how all those customers who got stuck with Vista when they wanted XP will be accomodated?

I was trying to decide which forum to put it in... and I admit I tried to "Macify" it by connecting it back to Leopard's delay, which will make it Rock solid, hopefully.

I've heard lots of horror stories with Programs that don't work on Vista, etc.. lots of hardward hs problems with Vista, etc... so if Leopard can ship ready to roll in any Mac (G4 and above, afaik, sorry G3's) system in existence, that will be another huge feat for Apple, and another big step past Microsoft and it's (apparently unwanted) Vista upgrade.

Nice pipe dream. Every major Mac OS upgrade has broken its fair share of programs and hardware. Audio software and hardware is notoriously finicky when it comes to OS upgrades.

Okay, you're talking about Pro-end applications, and It's LONG been established that they never jump in quick, they're still waiting for Vista SP1 before they jump on Vista. And Dell already had the option to stick with XP for Business/Pro-end computers.

We're talking about Consumer grade stuff here. The Inspirons and Dimensions are consumer grade systems. :D

I personally upgraded my friend's iMac G5, My own iBook G3 and then a Powerbook G4 to Tiger 10.4.0 and I had absolutely NO problems. So my point was that if Apple can keep the consumers happy and get them set on a Leopard upgrade that's been delayed to (hopefully) make it as bug-free as it can be (I'm also sure we'll get a 10.5.1 before XMas, probably), then Apple will have succeeded where Microsoft (so far) has not, in the Vista/Leopard wars.
