Convert Wedding Audio Tape...

I have an audio tape of our wedding with music, vows and singing. What would be the "sweet spot" for encoding it from my stereo into the audio-in of my mac in iTunes?

My guess is 192kbps VBR?
Is VBR even necessary?

Remember that the input on your computer is a mic level input and your stereo outputs line level. You can buy an audio interface for about $50, that is USB.
it's your wedding. take the highest settings available given the recording time and the space needed for a CD. i would take the highest settings and burn to a backup DVD too then maybe compress a bit for CD. i'm a bit anal about this stuff though :)

the other post was right about getting something to input the sound with.
Can you tell me some decent usb audio interfaces?

I thought it would be fine to plug in from my stereo's headphone jack directly into my mic jack on my mac?

That's not completely true. Most newer Macs including the iMac are line level, not mic level and require a USB adapter for mic input. So, it all depends on the Mac being used.
I have a 1st gen intel iMac and also a 1st gen intel macbook. Do I still need this usb adapter?
You would need it for Mic input, not standard audio line level input. :)
