Oh boy.

I'm on "infinite hold", it seems, with Apple's support line in Mexico. They didn't give an option for English in the welcome recording, so this could be interesting.

The 1-800 # for Apple Support in Canada apparently doesn't work via Skype. :(

Does anyone know of a NON-1-800 number for Apple Canada Support?

Found it. Just call the head office 905.513.5800 and they'll transfer you.

So here's the result of my call:

Problems:
- bulging battery
- palmrest discoloration
- palmrest edge cracked (now broken off)
- intermittent flickering of the screen backlight

Apple Support response:
- battery is not one of those on the list of "problem" batteries.
- discoloration & palmrest issues: will need to go in for service
- flickering: sent me two Knowledge Base articles on resetting NVRAM, PRAM and the System Management Controller.

My options are to take it to Mexico City for repair of the physical issues (if the techs determine that it is Apple's problem).

I decided to go ahead and pick up AppleCare for the remaining two years, since I'd have to pay $59 per incident anyway (which IMHO is one stupid policy), and I do get the student discount ($248 taxes in). So... if the MacBook survives until my return to Canada in September, I'll have it serviced there. Otherwise, if it dies, then it's a trip to Mexico City.

Ah, well... at least I have no pressure to offload a bunch of material and find alternate computer access before the original June 21st warranty expiry...
