Car mod?

Was behind this car and wondered if anyone can figure out what body was used.
Sorry, couldn't get a shot of the front. If it helps at all, the pic was shot through the window of an MX-5.

It's a late 50s model Volkswagen Beetle, perhaps a 57 or so by the size of the rear window. I'll have to think about the rear wheel treatment, but motorcycle comes to mind as my first impression. The cooling vents for the air cooled original engine have been filled and it appears the engine compartment lid has been shortened from its original length as well. The fenders have been removed in favour of the cycle type covers which lead me to believe it might even be cycle powered on a trike chassis. It would have been much easier to tell if the exhaust was visible.

Here's a shot of a 57 VW with minor mods:

And a 57 convert nearly stock:

Heh - Ena's photo looks like it's taken approx. one block from our office (a softball lob the other side of the RONA store.)
Sinc, thanks so much for helping out with my curiosity :)
Saw this car downtown for a second. Definitely a custom, it looks to me like a 'hot rod' in the dragster/dunebuggy/supermodified vein - tubular chromed steel chassis, exposed front suspension, open wheel - which a VeeDub body has been dropped onto. The front end is extended fron the Beetle, didn't get much of look at it but is squared off like a Model A Ford 'rod.
Now it sounds to me like the classic Rolls Royce front on a VW.

CanadaRAM, thanks for more info. Will add it to the file of unusual and old cars I've seen.

Lars, yes I drive an MX-5. It's mine, it's paid for and I've never redlined it. Anything else you want to know? ;):D

Nice choice of car. Considering getting one myself in the next couple of years, assuming they're still in production 3 years down the road. How do you find the low-to-the-ground seating? Manual transmission? Color? :) ;) (Not to harass you too much about it...)
Here's one of mine you can add to your list Ena:

(It's a customized 1949 Meteor.) ;)
