Can't install OS on External drive?

1509 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Pamela
So I've got a 300gig external drive and I thought I'd be able to install OS X on a partition of it. But she no go no where. (ie. it wouldn't let me install on the drive or on any partitions of the drive) Why's that?

I was hoping to use the drive (which is connected to my airport extreme using airport disk) as a server that I can access from home...my understanding is that in order to access a "computer" or drive remotely, then it has to have an OS installed on it?

I'm not sure I understand your question.

Let me set a few things straight:

You cannot install an OS on an AirDisk - the connection is simply not fast enough, and on top of that, the AirDisk is mounted from within the OS, so booting from it is impossible.

Also, you cannot simply install an OS onto a drive and have a server. You need a computer for that. However, you can make the AirDisk remotely accessible (AFAIK).
Thanks for setting that straight. You understood my question.

Any idea how I can make an AirDisk remotely accessible? I have tried to ask everyone I know (including posting on ehmac) as well as look everywhere I can look and I can't find out that information (this is why I was trying to install the OS on the hard drive).
Hmm. Upon further investigation, I too cannot find the appropriate settings. Sorry for misleading you.
Don't worry! You gave me the keywords to find it!!

"access AirDisk remotely"

I did a search with those words and found out how to do it! I wasn't using the term "airdisk" before, that's why i had no luck.

Turns out all you do is find out the IP address of your router by going to the airport extreme summary page, then go to "Connect to server..."...pop in the IP address and the router password and BOOM! There you are!

THANKS!!

(but now i just have to get it to see the server in windows...the whole reason I'm doing this! lol...but at least I'm halfway there :D)
