I updated Camino gto version 1.5.1, the latest, because 1.5 was somewhat "flaky"; well it turns out Camino 1.5.1 is even worse.
Just wondered if anyone else is having problems or if this is unique to me.
What happens is that it works fine when I first launch Camino, but after looking at only a few websites, Camino then basically stops responding.
Either the back button doen't work, or I click on a link and nothing happens, or I click on a picture and it won't open.
At the bottom of the screen it shows "loading...." in the left hand corner, but it never finishes loading.
This happens with sites like cnn, when I then look at cnn with firefox, everything is fine.

Why don't I use firefox - well for one all my bookmarks are set up nicely in Camino - Camino does a better job as far as the bookmark bar is concerned; the other issue is that firefos saves websites as a .asp file rather than .html and then the file won't open on the Mac unless I manually change the suffix.

General question: What your current browser of choice?

I find I end up changing browsers every few months because the performance of any specific browser seems to get worse over time; and to top it off, I have some sites that will only work with one specific browser.
This whole web experience is beginning to become a real pain.

The Camino people conned me into upgrading with this message on their website:

Since 1.5.1 had been out for a little while and I heard nothing negative about it, I went for it especially since I did have some "stability" issues with it.
But Camino 1.5.1 is worse.......or was.
Suddenly it started to become much more responsive - that withot me doing anything special.
Before I reloaded both Camino and the Mac OS several times, but that didn't make any difference.
I also have a brand new install of 10.4.10 which I did yesterday, the OS should be OK.

How is Shiira doing right now? That used to be one of your favourites.

I still use Shiira but my current setup can not be discussed just yet ;)
Camino works fine tho.. :D So does Shiira.
In fact it seems everything works better...

I decided to try firefox again and downloaded their latest version 2.0.0.7.
Boy - does it ever zip along. Not the slightest hesitation anywhere - websites were up instantaneously.
I didn't think my DSL link was that fast. Absolutely super in rendering pages; I tried all the websites I'm having difficulty with using Camino and Firefox just blazes through them.
Downloads seem to be faster as well, but hard to compare.

However, I find the user interface on Camino much better than firefox. Two snags I ran into already in the first few minutes.
For one, Firefox doesn't offer Camino as one of the browser options to import bookmarks from and there was no import option from an .html bookmark file.
Well at least not where it should be as one of the import options under the file menu.
Firefox help was no help either. I first thought I had to import from Camino to Safari and then from Safari to Firefox. But google came to the rescue.
The bookmark file import option is in the bookmark manager (as are the other bookmark imports as well). Lousy interface IMHO, having part of the capability double - either all or nothing.

The second snag (for me at least) is that the bookmark toolbar only accomodates a limited number of bookmarks or folders - all that fits in one line, the rest hang off the end where you need to click to access them. Googling for a solution for that brought up some discussions other people have about exactly that same issue.
On Camino, the bookmark toolbar just became wider to accomodate a second and third line of bookmarks - something firefox needs to implement.
On Camino one could also just grab the URL and drop it into the bookmark toolbar to add it - not in FF.

But boy - is it ever fast!

I upgraded to 1.5.1 for a while when I had a PowerBook, and it ran fine. When I installed it on my Cube, I had the same problems your described. I went and downgraded to 1.05, and have been using it as my primary browser since... Still waiting for an update to Camino to see if they fixed it.

I have been using Camino 1.6 alpha 1 for more than two months on my G4 iMac, no problem at all.

For speed on Firefox, I started to use Firefox 3.0 alpha (current version at alpha 9) at also about two months ago and found it incredibly fast; definitely faster than Firefox 2.x.

Thanks -

I might as well try Camino 1.6 alpha 1 because 1.5.1 is really sporadic for me. Works fine sometimes and lousy othertimes - even on the same website.

Interesting comment about FF 3 alpha being faster that FF 2.x
FF 2.x is instantaneous for me - if anything renders faster, I sure couldn't tell just looking at the screen. And at that point, an increase in speed becomes irrelevant.

I'm still using a beta version of Camino 1.0. Still seems to work great on the eMac (10.3.8) despite the year and a half since any system or browser updates.

The cable guy just hooked us up after 3 weeks of "Tomorrow for sure." and I am still getting reaquanted with Mac browsing. But I can say Camino is still successfully blocking the Monster.ca ads and it's not flashing a poop-up to tell me all about it.:D

I downloaded Camino 1.6 alpha and it is sure whipping along nicely.
Maybe not quite as fast as FF but not far behind.
And it has some nice features I need that FF doesn't have - so now I'm back on Camino - thanks for the tip.

There is one technical standard that FF3 alpha meets but other browsers from Mozilla don't.

FF3 alpha passes the Acid2 test. None of the other Mozilla browsers, alpha/beta/final version -- Camino, FF2.x, Flock, Mozilla/Seamonkey -- pass the test.

I don't know how significant it is for a browser to pass the Acid2 test, or it is just an academic exercise. I know that Safari, Shiira and Opera all pass this test.

Suggest those having issues with Camino try the new Netscape.
Very very fast and well thought out.

Just downloaded Netscape 9.
Quite fast but not faster than Camino 1.6a.

Problem I find is that Netscape seems to have copied the Firefox interface to a large degree and has the same issues, for me at least.
- Single line Bookmark Toolbar
- Webpages are downloaded as .asp files
- not an intuitive user interface (I guess user opinion may differ here)
In addition, Netscape doesn't block ads the way FF and Camino does. I have "block pop-up window" enabled, but ads on the side bar of forums still show up - they are blocked by Camino. Camino has an additional "Block Web advertizing" option which Netscape lacks.
On the plus side - Netscape will access my banking site where I previously needed to use Safari, Camino is blocked, so are all browsers except IE and Netscape.
Safari wasn't enabled either until People complained bitterly, including myself.

So I'm staying on Camino 1.6a.

But it's amazing the number of browser options Mac users have. 5% marketshare and there seem to be more "main stream" browsers for Mac than for Windows.

Single line Bookmark Toolbar
But you can use the Sidepane for bookmarks which was always a plus with Shiira - never understodd why bookmarks were not vertical where most of the sapce resides.

Doesn't work for me.
Some of the websites I visit use sidepanes for navigation and their index.
If I add the sidepane for bookmarks I have to scroll left and right continuously to read messages or part of the page, especially bad if a photograph is on the page since these don't automatically shrink to take up only the remaining space.

May be an option when I move from my 19-inch monitor to a widescreen
