seeing as how you are planning on taking a FW external drive with you on this trip.
This is what I would do...
partition your FW external drive into 2 partitions.
Clone your main drive to 1 partition, I use SuperDuper, but CCC should do the job.
Use the other partition for whatever....
Then I would daily clone my main drive to the FW external, this is where SuperDuper really shines, it'll let you backup just the changed files, so it'll keep your clone backup up-to-date in just minutes.
In case disaster should strike, you just need to boot from the FW drive,(hold the "Option" key and reboot, select the FW drive from the boot screen), and then clone the system back onto your Main drive.

You'll use SuperDuper to clone back to the G5 while booted from the external and you can use the "smart update" feature (if purchased) which will make the G5 identical to the external.
Assuming the laptop is a PPC unit as is the G5
