Thanks for the tip Ohenri (WD hard drives at Compusmart)...
now I need a FW enclosure for it, portable would be nice, made in Canada if possible.
Any advice on pros/cons of bus powered vs external ac, brands etc?
Kazaa by Lava Computer makes USB 1.1/2.0 and FireWire enclosures in Canada. However, I reviewed their USB 2.0 Enclosure for 3.5" mechanisms and it did not receive a good score.
If you want a truly stunning and dymanic product with the use of top-of-the-line EHCI and OHCI bridging chipsets, use WiebeTECH enclosures. (http://www.wiebetech.com/).
Their use of Oxford Semiconductor 911, 912, 922 OHCI and EHCI bridges ensures maximum transfer performance, compatibility, and compliance. Avoid any and all products bridges with ISD chips (ISD300, ISD300A), unless you like to be limited to 11.5MB/sec.
I have a macally ide-firewire hd enclosure. Wasn't too expensive,($150) but wasn't made in Canada either, as far as I can tell. So far so good, I think the fans getting a little noisier, as it gets older.
