Man. This drive in my 20" Intel iMac sure burn slowly :p

Aside from Apple blank media (which seems to be the fastest and what Apple has based all their burn speed on), have any of you guys noticed faster burn speeds with different brands?

A thread hereAttention 8x Superdrive owners: Can you burn DVD's at 8x? - AppleNova Forums mentions that the Apple 4x media burned 4G in 12 minutes while the TDK 16X took 29.

That's nuts!

Now I'm wondering if I should just pull my Pioneer DVD-110 out of my old B&W, toss it into a casing and use that... .

But... let's take things one step at a time.

Blank media; what burns fastest at the most reasonable price?

Stay far away from Maxell as well. 8x media will only burn 4x and I get the occassional hardware error, too. This never happens with the other media I use. Sony and Fuji mostly, which burn at their advertised speeds and are 100% reliable.

A word of warning;

Unless you know the reputation of the retailer, beware that some retailers are selling "pirated" or "re-branded" Verbatim media. I discovered, very early, blankmedia.ca sells the real thing.

Interesting.

From my experience, FutureShop, BestBuy, TSCC and Staples all don't pirate Verbatim brands, and there's usually a sale every once in a while where you can stock up (usually for around ~$5-7/25 DVD's)

Like this right now:

Another word of warning about Verbatims -- there are two kinds, and one is generally better. The better ones have the "Open <-------> Lock" on the top of the spindle cases in Times New Roman font -- and the "other" ones have it in Arial font. You should get the TNR ones, and avoid the Arial ones, is what I've heard.

OK... we're getting completely off track here...

I'm really interested in the burning times of DVDs, not the quality of the blank media.

I already buy the good stuff but a google search with 'Ma****a' and 'blank media' will toss out a lot of discussion about how different brands (the good ones and the not so good ones) will burn the same amount of data using the same burn speed at different times.

What a surprise - the Apple blank media was invariably the fastest burned DVDs ;)

So I'm actually trying to solicit any opinions about *which* good quality blank media has a good burn speed (aside from the blank Apple media which is a pain to get) on the Ma****a drives that came with a lot of the Intel iMacs (at least).

Perhaps some others have used different blank media and have noticed one brand's faster than the other?
