Best cable lock for MBP

1625 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  macmac
I will be taking my MBP to college. Even though my dorm room will be locked whenever I am not in it I still am considering a cable lock. The placement of the slit to put the lock in is not convenient as it can block the USB port. Which cable locks do you guys recommend to maximize security and not block the USB port?

A watchful eye and a mean right hook.

EDIT : I don't condone violence.....question? Why not carry with you always . I did it pretty much everywhere with my macbook
Or hide your MBP, locked up of course, when you leave the room.

I don't know how it relates to the USB port, but the Defcon 4-digit cable lock with alarm works well; you need something to cable it with.

On top of hardware security.. I would recommend taking a look at some software.

The one I've heard great things about is called Undercover.

Because laptops are increasingly popular, and desktops are becoming smaller and more portable, computer theft has reached huge proportions worldwide: there were about 600,000 laptops stolen in the USA in the year 2004. According to a recent FBI report, 97% of all stolen computers are never recovered. Many people we know have had their Macs stolen, often in 'safe' situations. That's why we developed Undercover: a unique theft-recovery application designed from the ground up for Mac OS X.
They even have education discounts:

Single User license: $39
Household license: $49
Site license: $199
Student license: $29
Volume educ. license: $6/Mac
In addition to a lock, there is a program called "iAlertU" You'll have to google it. Basically it's an alarm system for your mac. You arm it either with the remote or keyboard. If the mac gets moved, keyboard buttons pressed, the system will set off the alarm and it will sound the alarm. Even closing the lid will not shut it down. In addition, it also takes a picture of the thief. It compliments the keylock i believe.
