The version 1.0 (final release candidate) of XBench is available to test your Mac. Post and compare your system to others on the website.

My results:
90.11 (overall score)
Tested as normally run (startup configuration)

OSX Jaguar v10.2.3
G4 867 summer 2001 Quicksilver (256k L1 2MB L2)
1.18 GB RAM CL3 @ 133 Mhz

(First version 1GHz dual processor).

I really don't believe these benchmark tests, there are just too many execution paths in code, a little stack alignment problem and the performance takes a hit, branch prediction fails, performance takes a hit, cache gets flushed, performance takes a hit... but the OpenGL graphics were beautiful!

Go to the website and compare your system with others.

The benchmark tests will vary somewhat; if you want a good indication, run the test immediatly after startup. You should probably run it a few times in a row to get an average of x tests.

You're supposed to quit all background processes before you run it; I prefer real-world tests so I just ran it as I would normally use my Mac (37 processes running).

I have noticed (from reports on the website) that the best scores come from machines with the main (OSX) drive(s) on a PCI ATA 133 controller & drive, the very best have RAID striping enabled over 2 drives.

I would expect monitor settings to also affect the benchmark. Update: doesn't seem to much.

Immediately after startup, I get 90+ numbers, if I run it after doing a few things I get 86-88's.

OpenGL spinning squares: 53.47 frames/s
Disk Test: 30.22 (not surprising, since it's a laptop harddrive).
Sequential uncached write: 11.80MB/sec (4K blocks)
Sequential uncached read: 11.51MB/sec (4K blocks)

One of the things I noticed is just how important L3 cache is for G4 processors (especially when it comes to Altivec). A G4 @ 667MHz with 1MB L3 cache can post better Altivec scores to a G4 @ 800MHz with no L3 cache. Huh.

Max, your results seem OK; where they differ significantly from mine is in the memory tests.

Not sure why, but your memory results seem somehow out of whack. System memory in particular seems to benchmark very low, while your stream memory seems quite high.

It may be the app doen't work properly with your configuration (unusually low & high numbers), or your system needs a bit of maintenance (prebinding, daily/weekly/monthly, etc) or there is some issue with the RAM installed on your machine. G4-733's on the site run from 65-74. By the way, where's your L3 cache (should be 1MB) ?

What benchmark do you get with the memory test disabled (unckeck the box)?

I have the low end 733mhz Quicksilver
I am puzzled about the memory as well.

It feels really snappy though. Notice that it rates my machine at 734mhz

Weird

Anyone have an iBook 700 or 800MHZ? I wouldn't mind seeing the scores.

I see the L3 cache is more important than the bus speed, but having both really helps.

I would encorage everyone to post and compare scores at the Xbench website. The comparison database they have works great. You can sort the results by clicking on "Score", "Processor" or "Submit Date".

I can't say I would consider the app to be conclusive; I have noticed a few strange things in my own tests. Most puzzling for me is the test report lines:
Memory Test: System: Allocate (x) K/alloc/sec
... where I get reports in the 90's in some tests, while occassionally I get somewhere around 40K/alloc/sec. When I do get the 90Kalloc result, the benchmark score is something like 250; which to me indicates this may be an erronious reading. I do see some others with similar machines getting unusually high results on this score at the website.

The lower score is consistent with most other comparable machines, and when I do get this result (usually by running the benchmark closer to shutdown than startup) it changes my overall benchmark to the high 80's.

It does help remind us exactly how benchmarks can be tricky tools to measure performance; always a good thing to keep in mind when reading any review.

However, as a tool to compare your machine with others at the website, I find more value. Excluding the possibility of an erronious test, it provides us clues as to what area of our machines seems either underpar, or worthwhile as an upgrade. I have, in the past, used MacWorld tests to make upgrade decisions (I don't consider a new Mac until I can at least double the performance of my current machine, which I guess will happen sometime later this year).

Neil Yates' machine, for example, is nearly identical to mine. For some reason I get better disk performance than he does, so Neil may take this as an indication that this is an area he may look into. On the other hand, other parameters on his machine bench a bit faster than mine.

For the record, my OSX partition is relatively small, at 19.52GB and is the first physical partition. My guess is this would give better benchmarks than a larger partition or a whole disk (single partition).

I do have an ATA-133 PCI controller, but decided to keep my OEM Apple drive on the default (motherboard) ATA-66 controller. If as an experiment I placed my OSX partition on a faster drive (I have 1 ATA-100 and 1 ATA-133 HD available) I would definitely run Xbench to quantifiy and/or justify the alteration.
