I have a friend on Labrador's North Coast who is doing (and has done) avalanche research. He is inquiring about Apple computers and research software. Number crunching, graphs, and GPS/map overlays is what he has on his agenda. I will see what he can get in the Apple line for $2000 max., but I am unfamiliar with what type of programs are out there for such research. Does anyone have any direction for me on this, and for my friend?

Pretty esoteric stuff.

If he has done this is the past -- even in traditional, non-computer enabled ways -- he surely must have colleagues he can speak with on this? How about scientific users groups? Like, how would a regular Joe such as all of us have any insight on this? maybe there are some scientists in our membership, but there has got to be better resources on the web.

Well, he's kind of a lone-ranger on this. Real good at it, though. He's rubbed shoulders with some big whigs, but he has built his own research foundation.
