At Macworld Expo, ATI announced, and showed off, the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition graphics card, boosting 256 MB DDR-SDRAM graphics memory, which will work in the Power Mac G5 only - 8X-AGP support (533 MHz bus). Quote from Article:

Retailing for an estimated $469 and available only for the G5, the card will be available intially as a BTO upgrade, and then later as a separate retail purchase. The current initial availability is hoped to be around mid-February.

When asked about its G5 exclusivity, ATI responded that they feel the current installed base of G5 users is large enough to support the release of a powerful G5-only card.
Hardcore gamers who own a Dual-1.8 GHz G5 or better, with a fat wallet, this is the card you want.

Thoughts?

It's nice to see ATI providing this. The only way you can currently get a Radeon 9800 for your G5 is to buy an OEM Radeon 9800 when you buy your G5. The current Retail Radeon 9800 doesn't work in the G5.

There is also a minor annoyance with the OEM Radeon 9800... it has no Control Panel and you can't use certain features of the Radeon 9800.

Just saw this at the booth this afternoon. Really nice card. They had setup where you can turn an LCD display sideways and do portrait view with it. Very cool. Will try to get picture later.

They had a side by side comparison with ATI 9800 and the "competition" running Halo. Water, grass, haze looked SOOO much better. They were handing out CD's that had lots of ATI demo files on it at the show.
