Appletalk....or something?

I used to have my Powermac (OS 9) & my iBook (10.2) networked via an ethernet cable using Appletalk. However, after David Thompson's excellent advice in networking a PC to my iBook, I can't get the 2 macs to talk anymore.
When I try to Connect to Server, I get the powermac in the available listing but then get this error message:
Connection failed
This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.
When I use the network browser in OS 9, it just freezes up or can't locate the iBook.
Any ideas on whats up here.
(And prior to this, Appletalk worked flawlessly aside from the iBook occasionally losing the connection for some reason.)

SOunds like you have the same IP addressed provisioned on both machines. Make sure they are different, then try.

Sorry.
I have about 2.5 gigs to bring from one machine to the other but I dont want to do it over FTP.Basicly,I just cant figure out the best way...or even the right way to set up Appletalk in OSX.Everytime I've tried to connect to the other machine,it connects to the internet and goes through there instead of directly to the other Mac.Do I need Server or something?Chances are I'm just undereducated here.

Mr. Thompson does offer excellent advice on Macs and connectivity.

I still prefer to use DAVE 4 (OS 9 & X native) found at www.thursby.com to attach a PC to a Mac and it does NOT affect the Mac to Mac connection in any way.

The easiest way to transfer files between two Macs and you don't care about internet, use an ethernet cable to connect them both, and have one set to share its files (either or does not matter) and with the other one transfer the files after logging on to the server... Piece of cake with a Mac...
Setting it up permanantly as a network takes a little more work, in that you have to incorporate the router and the DSL modem...
