Actually, the HD can be upgraded even by you, doesn't have to be an apple service provider, and it will be covered under warranty. (Obviously not the HD in question!)
(I have upgraded the HD in a 12" PowerBook 867 I used to own, and when I was having problems with the SuperDrive, they repaired it under warranty without so much as an extra glance at the upgraded HD.)
