Is apple planning to issue an update for the older apple TV units to allow netflix etc?

there seem to be no hardware reason not to....

Apple's already said it's not gonna happen.

That's 'cause the new AppleTV is based on an Apple A4 (ARM) core, running iOS, whereas the Older AppleTV units are based on a 700Mhz Pentium M chip running a low-end OSX version of FrontRow.

The two respective versions of the software are not compatible with each other's hardware.

I've emailed Netflix about the issue, But the response so far is that they don't know,
Netflix does have an App for the iPod, So it is feasible at least to get an App for the ATV.

Just not too sure if it will ever happen though.

They'll still do everything they did when you bought them. You can even do things on the old AppleTV that you can't on the new one (like PURCHASE content from iTunes).
