Have things changed since 2014, date of the last thread I could find on this issue, the gist of which was antivirus not necessary?
An article in Trousseaux d’accès & mots de passe made the point compellingly to me that things have changed. See article "Non, non, non ..."
(I don't know whether this is a French-only mag but no doubt many of you will be able to read it anyway.)
It has a couple of examples. Flashback, a virus of some sort that attaches itself to Flashplayer updates (Oh how I'd love to free myself from Flashplayer!) for one.
And recommends Antivirus for Mac from Intego. I also wonder about F-secure. Anybody have any recommendations? Including "forget it".
Incidentally, there is a link to an article on the same page which provides detailed instructions on how to get COMPLETELY rid of macKeeper. It worked for me.

I would suggest that a good ad blocker might be far more valuable than anti-virus software.

The big issue is not virus its Trojans. I recently turned off my ad blocker to allow a TV network video to play. Forgot to reset it when I went on to another site. Had at least 3 trojans urging me to install same. One was MacKeeper, then there was FlashPlayer telling me to update, even though it was up to date and auto update was toggled to never. Also one telling me the update to my browser was ready to install. That too was up-to-date and auto update disabled.

All were clearly Trojans and in the dozens of previous times I had visited that site, my ad blocker had prevented them from even presenting themselves.

Suggestions for good adblockers?

Try:
https://safari-extensions.apple.com

Personally I prefer and use AdBlock.

Others seems to prefer using Adblock Plus.

You might want to consider also installing the Ghostery extension as well that so many seem to recommend.

Read some of the comments and info if you like.
