A trade mark is a trade mark, noted as TM. Normally a firm will go through the process of registering that mark, but it takes a little time.

A registered trade mark is one that has gone through the process to further entrench the legal right to that mark, noted as ®.

Trade marks are national (not international) so it's often the case that the registered mark exists in some countries and the unregistered mark in others. Since you typically make the most money selling a given product in the US, it's often that a firm will register the mark only in the US, or perhaps the UK for european/african firms, etc.

TM is short for TradeMark (filed for a TradeMark)
® is for Registered TradeMark (the Canadian Patent & TradeMark Office is about 2 years behind right now)
SM is short for ServiceMark
